Toronto Street Trees

Toronto Street Trees was an easy way to look up details on Toronto's city-owned street trees, like finding the nearest trees of a specific species, or viewing a map of trees on your street. The site was up from 2013 to 2020.

What happened to the site?

As of December 30th 2020 I made the decision to take the site down as part of retiring the services that the site ran on, which I did to reduce expenses and upkeep. The tree data was not the most up to date and there was also an unmet need for adding more context1.

Where can I get the data?

You can download the Street Tree dataset from the city's open data initiative. It's a Shapefile that can be opened by GIS software like the open source QGIS.

What's next?

I'm keen to reboot the project in future2. If you have ideas or skills that you can contribute (or a story about how the site was useful to you!), please drop me a line at jordan.mht+trees@gmail.com.

Were you in the middle of using the site for a project or with a group? If so, let me know and I'll see how I can help or point you in the right direction.

1 For example, trees are coded to the address parcel, but the parcel itself was not displayed.
2 Ideally in a way that allows for improving the data, supports local tree audits, and helps connect folks with other resources about trees and trees in Toronto
